A mass stabbing at a Chinese elementary school ends with eight children killed and two injured. CBS News. The attack occurred at 8:00 am on the first day of school. A 40 year old man named Yu was arrested for the crime. The suspect was recently released from prison after serving a term for attempted murder. The attack is yet another example of attacks on schoolchildren in China. China has no gun ownership to speak of but attacks still occur, often with knives or homemade explosives.
My Comment:
While America has it's problem with mass shootings it's important to note that running amok isn't simply an Americana phenomenon. China has a massive problem of it's own with these kind of knife attacks on children. These attacks are all to common and show that this kind of attack can happen pretty much anywhere.
China, of course, has no private gun ownership to speak of. The state is the only one allowed to have weapons and there is no chance for anyone to defend themselves. This has made mass shootings pretty much impossible, but it hasn't stopped mass killings. Indeed, it seems these mass stabbings are common enough that they don't always get media coverage. Part of that may be due to media censorship in China but I get the feeling that American media won't cover stories that hurt the gun control narrative.
In this case it seems like a single classroom was attacked. It didn't seem like there was anyone left to defend the children and the attacker kept up his attack until police arrived. Once again this shows that response time is everything. The longer someone has to kill without being confronted the less important the type of weapon is.
The case also seems to have some similarities to other mass attacks in America. Supposedly this suspect was released after serving a term for attempted murder. Like many of the mass shooters in America who either were involved in the criminal justice system or should have been. If this person had not been let out of prison in the first place he wouldn't have been able to kill eight people and wound two more.
I do wonder if media coverage is part of the problem in China as well. In America gun violence is glorified by the media and used to push politics, which of course inspires attacks. There is a reason why everyone is using AR-15's even though they aren't the best weapon for mass shootings (not by far) and that's because the media has made it seem like that gun is the gun to use.
Something similar may be happening in China. The message there is if you are one of the losers in society the answer is to go to a school and stab a bunch of children. I don't doubt that China has their own problems with people like this but I think their media is the reason why people commit mass stabbings instead of arson or bombings.
