CDC reinstates eviction ban for Coronavirus.

CDC Logo.

The CDC has reinstated an eviction ban for the Coronavirus that will last until October 3rd. AP. The original ban had expired after the Supreme Court signaled that the CDC had overshot its authority on the issue and that any ban had to come from Congress. Joe Biden and Congress were unable to get a deal to keep the ban. Biden's failure infuriated the far left, who had been protesting since the eviction ban expired. The Supreme Court will almost certainly overrule the ban.

My Comment:

Talk about kicking the can down the road. In a previous post I said that many people had took advantage of this moratorium to simply stop paying rent. In doing so they accrued a debt that they will likely never be able to pay off. Now, instead of 10 months of debt they are going to have more than a year of rent due this October. All of these people will likely face eviction and bankruptcy. And it's the governments fault.

I don't have a huge amount of sympathy for the big landlord companies and the absolute scum that have been buying up every house they can like Blackrock. But I do feel for the smaller "mom and pop" landlords that just have a few units. These people are going to go utterly bankrupt as well, assuming they haven't already. These folks have done nothing wrong but are having their lives ruined by government policy and it doesn't seem like they are going to get any help.

Biden cited the fact that the rent relief the government borrowed has yet to reach the people who need it. That is true for some states, especially New York. But I don't think it will matter that much. I am not sure how it works but unless the money is paid directly to the landlords, I think these delinquent tenants will spend the money on just about anything else rather than paying down their debts. The poor allocation of these funds certainly hasn't helped things.

I personally think that Biden made a major political mistake here. Sure he was getting harassed by the far left but this was a band aid that needed to be ripped off now. By kicking the can down the road he has just ensured that the far left will attack him yet again. And like I said, the problem is going to be worse in October as people will have gotten even more in debt by then and landlords are going to be even more furious.

That of course assumes that the Supreme Court doesn't simply stop the policy. My guess is that will happen as they basically warned the CDC and the Biden administration to not do this again. They said that congress should be the one to put this in place if they were going to do it. I don't think the Court will look kindly on this since they told Biden and the CDC that this was off the table.

It's amazing too as it seems very clear that the economic impact of the Coronavirus is mostly done, the only problem is the governments lingering reaction to it. Cases may be up but I have seen no evidence that the delta variant is more deadly than former variants. Plus 70% of Americans supposedly had at least one dose of the vaccine. Things should have been returned to normal at this point but the government is drawing it out for some reason...
