A Chicago cop was killed and another severely wounded in a shooting during a traffic stop. New York Post. The officer was identified as Ella French, a 29 year old officer with three years of experience. The other officer shot is still in the hospital and has not yet been identified. The officers were shot after they pulled over a car with three people in it and one of the passengers opened fire. One suspect was injured and all three were arrested. Chicago has had a massive crime wave and though French is the first one to die since 2019, 38 incidents of police officers being shot or shot at happened in 2021.
My Comment:
This story is making the rounds on conservative Twitter and it's pretty obvious why. Chicago is a disaster area and violence there is out of control. Officer French is just the latest victim and one that is now famous. It doesn't hurt that she was attractive.
Her death is an indictment of the criminal justice policies of Chicago. The city has failed to control violence and anytime they are asked to do something, their only answer is "more gun control". Indeed, Chicago's mayor, Lori Lightfoot, immediately blamed guns for this incident instead of the criminals that shot the officers.
I do have to wonder why on earth anyone would want to be a police officer in a big American city these days. Back when I graduated college with a degree in Criminal Justice I considered being a police officer. It didn't work out as I graduated back in '07 and the economy tanked, meaning that every police job was getting 300 applicants. If I really wanted to be a cop though, I could have been one in Milwaukee as nobody wanted to work there. And that was back in 07-08, when policing was still largely respected as a profession and the police could expect at least a little support from mayors.
I really don't understand what the shooter was thinking here. Getting into a shootout with three officers accomplished nothing and may have gotten the shooter shot. Or at least one of the people in the car. They didn't escape and probably only faced a traffic ticket or maybe an illegal weapons charge. Not worth almost getting killed and spending the rest of their lives in prison.
And I think that's the real problem with these criminals. They don't think in the long term and act brashly without thinking. Shooting it out with the cops is a terrible idea and it makes zero sense but these folks don't care. Because they don't actually think.
The massive wave of crime is directly related to the riots we had last year and the general demonization of police. Many police have abandoned the profession completely while those that remain are no longer taking risks. Police have no reason to put their lives on the line when they know their every action will be criticized and that they will be thrown under the bus at any time.
The Democrats are to blame for this. They provide social and political cover to rioters and criminals, the won't prosecute people who commit crimes but they will prosecute police that did nothing ethically or morally wrong. They lie and say to minorities that their lives are at risk whenever they encounter police and then give excuses to the criminals when they commit crimes.
Will things ever change? I think so. People are getting sick of the crime and the deification of utter scum like George Floyd, Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin. They don't want to see dead cops and they want to be able to sleep at night without having to lock their doors at night. Eventually the Democrats will start losing elections and then they will finally realize that their actions have consequences. Unfortunately, that may take awhile and we will see more dead heroes like Officer Ella French.
