Donald Trump easily tops the CPAC poll for who should run for president in 2024.

Donald Trump has easily topped the straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). Fox News. Trump got 70% of the vote with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis getting 21%. No other candidate got more than 1%. DeSantis easily topped a second ballot that did not include Trump at 68%, with other candidates not topping 5%. President Trump also had 98% of attendees say they were extremely or somewhat satisfied with his performance as President.

My Comment:

More evidence of the obvious, if President Trump wants to run in 2024 he will be the candidate for the 2024 race. No other candidate even comes close with only Florida Governor Ron DeSantis being a potential threat. The GOP is the party of Donald Trump now, regardless of how anyone feels about it.

Things only get a little more interesting if he does not decide to run. If he doesn't than it will almost certainly be Ron DeSantis. DeSantis is a GOP hero largely because he is one of the few Republicans that is actually fighting against the left right now. He has opposed the worse examples of over reach when it comes to Coronavirus and he has actually pushed the left on things like critical race theory, censorship and various other excesses from the left.

What is interesting is what happens if both decide to run. It would be a tough choice for me at least. I think President Trump was a very good president but he does tend to put his foot in his mouth quite a bit. DeSantis doesn't have that problem. But he also don't have the name recognition and love that President Trump has. Plus having him as President would leave Florida hanging in the wind.

My guess is that DeSantis will only run if Trump does not and if that's the case Trump will endorse him. And if Trump does run DeSantis will likely endorse him. I don't think anyone wins if the two remaining stars of the Republican Party destroy each other.

But will Trump run? I think he wants to. H rightly feels that he was cheated out of a 2nd term and has a major ax to grind with his enemies. Doing so would secure his legacy and he could perhaps punish those who have treated him so badly.

On the other hand, Trump is getting old. He's still younger than Biden (who is pretty obviously senile) but at his age there is a real question if he will even be around in 2024. And though Trump thrives on campaigning the actual stress of the job might be too much to go through again. He might decide that hanging out at Mar-A-Lago is a lot better than being President.

Regardless of who the candidate is, I will be voting for the Republican who runs. I have nothing but contempt for the Democratic Party and they have to be stopped no matter what. It doesn't matter if it is Trump, DeSantis or even Ted Cruz, I still want justice.
