Twitter has suspended a sitting US congresswoman and GOP Senate Candidate Vicky Hartzler over a tweet critical of transgenders participating in sports. Fox News. The tweet contained a link to an add that was critical of swimmer Lia Thomas, a male to female transgender person who has dominated woman's swimming despite being biologically male. Twitter said the bad was for "deadnaming" which is when someone refers to a transgender person's birth name, in this case William Thomas. Representative Hartzler has refused to delete the tweet.
My Comment:
Utterly ridiculous, out of all the things to ban people for this is the dumbest. Deadnaming is probably one of the dumbest things to get upset about. Plus it's incredibly relevant to the issue at hand, referring to Thomas as William makes the point that they are biologically male. If you can't point that out than you can't even argue your side of the issue.
Having trans men compete in woman's sports is a valid issue as even with hormones and surgery, a transgender's body is still male. That means they are going to be stronger and faster than most women, even woman athletes. They have an innate advantage over biological women and if they are allowed to compete against them they will probably win most of the time. It makes woman's sports totally pointless.
But the reason for the ban is pretty much irrelevant. What does matter is that Twitter banned a candidate for expressing a popular viewpoint. Most people are against trans people in sports but if you ban discussion of that major issue than the issue is dead.
It's also election interference. By banning Vicky Hartzler Twitter is pushing the scales against her in both the primary race and in the general election. Without Twitter her campaign will be less effective. It might not be enough to make her lose, after all, people voted for candidates before Twitter, but it's essentially the same problem as trans men participating in woman's sports. By making things unfair you are interfering with the election.
Ironically, the incident might actually help Representative Hartzler get elected. Getting banned from Twitter is a badge of honor that proves you are willing to say things that big tech disagreed with. I know that I am proud of my twitter suspension that I got for calling Kyle Rittenhouse a hero. I'm not knowledgeable enough about the Missouri Senate race to say if she's the right candidate but without any other information, I would be more likely to vote for her because of this ban.
