Congressman Markwayne Mullin has been found and is safe.

Congressman Markwayne Mullin has been found safe. Reuters.

Congressman Markwayne Mullin has been found safe and is returning to the United States after an incident in Tajikistan where he disappeared for a time. Fox News. Mullin had went to Tajikistan in an effort to evacuate an American family stuck in Afghanistan. After an incident at the US Embassy in Tajikistan Mullins disappeared with neither the State Department or his staff knew where he was. Mullin said on Wednesday that he was safe and heading home and the efforts to rescue Americans in Afghanistan would continue. His aides said he was never in any danger.

My Comment:

Just a quick update to yesterday's post. That one was fairly popular so I will update it to link here to show people that Mullin is safe. People were obviously concerned about the fate of this congressman and I am guessing they will be pleased that he is safe.

It doesn't sound like his mission was a successful one. I said before that I thought it was a dangerous mission that had a large chance of failing but it doesn't sound like it even really got off the ground. It seems as though the embassy screwed him over and without the ability to hire people to try and rescue this family it wasn't able to be tried.

Still I have to say that at least Mullin tried. Which is more that can be said for the US government. I get the feeling that the Biden administration has totally written these people off and is leaving them to the mercy of the Taliban. It's just another sign of how dysfunctional this administration is.

I do think that there will be other efforts to get people out of Afghanistan and they probably will be about as successful. The Taliban control the border points and if they don't want people to leave there isn't much anyone can do with it. Mullin's plan, where a helicopter picks people up, could work, but is extremely dangerous. Crossing the border doesn't seem like an option, and it's important to note that not all of the countries that border Afghanistan are friendly to Americans. I'm not sure who the bigger danger is between the Taliban, Iran and Pakistan...

Thankfully, it seems as though the Taliban haven't been taking revenge on American citizens. The appear to be trying to have a go at respectability and don't want to alienate potential trade partners like Russia and China. Though I doubt either country cares too much about these stranded American citizens I don't think they would approve of them being abused or worse.

I still say the best thing the Taliban could do is reopen Kabul airport and allow any Americans to leave commercially. Even buy them a ticket if they have to. That would be the biggest power move they could make as it would utterly humiliate the United States...
