Major General Harold Green was killed in yesterdays attack. Yahoo/AP/U.S. Army
More information is being released about yesterdays insider attack in Afghanistan that killed a U.S. general and wounded a German brigadier general. Yahoo/AP According to new information the Afghan solider, named Rafiqullah, returned from patrol and did not turn his weapon in. Instead he hid with it in a bathroom and then opened fire on the generals. There is no indication of what the motive is or if the Generals were specifically targeted. The name of the U.S. General to die was released. Major General Harold Green was first U.S. general to die to enemy action since Vietnam (if you don't count 9/11). The German general, Michael Bartshcer, is in stable condition.
My Comment:
I hope general Bartshcer and the others wounded in this attack recover fully and my thoughts are with general Green's family and friends. These insider attacks are becoming a huge problem. The article listed quite a few more of these attacks recently and it has to be horrible for the morale of the soldiers stationed there. Afghanistan has been overshadowed by Ukraine, Israel/Gaza, Syria, Iraq and the Ebola crisis, but it is still a brutal and terrible war. If anything it is getting worse as U.S. and NATO troops are drawn down. I don't see it getting any better anytime soon. Come to think of it, I don't think Afghanistan has known peace in my lifetime.
