Edward Snowden, the whistleblower that exposed the NSA mass surveillance scandal, has been granted 3 more years of residence in Russia. -Yahoo/AP. Snowden has not been granted full asylum, which would have let him stay in Russia indefinitely. Snowden ended up in Russia after fleeing Hong Kong, and was stranded there when the U.S. pulled his passports. Snowden's location is unknown but it is known that he has a job in the Russian IT field.
My Comment:
Sigh. I like Snowden. He did a good thing. But what happens to him is not nearly as important as what happens to the NSA programs he exposed. Unfortunately the media is much more focused on what Snowden had for breakfast then the NSA. Sad really. Especially since the last major Snowden leak has already been published.
Also, I am aware that Glenn Greenwald released another article recently that was not related to Snowden. I haven't covered it since I haven't been able to devote enough time write it up in the way it deserves. The actual article itself wasn't that spectacular but the fact that it was not from Snowden's files is huge. There is another leaker out there and that is a huge deal. I think it is clear that the days of the government hiding everything and revealing nothing may be over as long as people with a conscious, like Snowden and this mystery leaker, take matters into their own hands. Hopefully I will have a full write up by tomorrow or Saturday morning.
