Can't make this up. Ebola clinic raided by looters, steal blood stained goods. -AP

Health workers prepare to clean up bodies. -AP

Looters attacked an Ebola quarantine facility in Liberia and stole goods visibly covered in blood, vomit and feces. -AP. The looters were upset that patients were being brought to the clinic from outside the area. Officials fear that the whole area may now be infected with Ebola. Police restored order to the area but not until after the goods were stolen. The people who live in the area, called the West Point Slum, are very suspicious of the government.

BBC is reporting that 20 people are missing from the clinic, all infected with the disease. They are also reporting that some people think Ebola is just a government hoax.

My Comment:
Part of me wants to say that these people deserve this for being so incredibly stupid as to steal blood stained sheets and beds, but the situation is too dire for that. And I wouldn't wish Ebola on anyone. Still, it just boggles my mind that people would do this. The looters are going to get sick and the people at that clinic might have even worse chances to survive now. The real enemy isn't Ebola. It's classic West-African government dysfunction, superstition, paranoia and good old fashioned stupidity. Ebola would be hard enough to contain under perfect conditions, but these are far from ideal conditions. I don't see how they can contain the disease at this point.

I'd like to think this kind of thing couldn't happen in the first world, but everyone is suspicious of their government these days. Paranoia and conspiracy theories are the rule, not the exception. I would hope that people wouldn't want to take the chance that they were wrong about the government making it up, but if they did it in Liberia, they can do it here.
