Smoke rises from the hospital that was attacked. NBC/AP.
Terrorists have attacked a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan, killing 13 people including two infants. NBC News. Three attackers dressed as police officers entered the hospital and started shooting and throwing grenades. Afghan special forces responded to the attack and rescued 100 people. ISIS has taken credit for the attack and they may have been targeting Shiite Muslims, who live in the area the hospital services. In response to this attack, and another attack in the country that killed 24 people Afghanistan has resumed offensive operations against the Taliban and ISIS. Both the Taliban and the Afghan government were working to try and achieve peace but those efforts are in question now.
My Comment:
Attacking a maternity ward is about as evil as you can get. It's unclear if the infants that died in this attack were killed on purpose or not but it's still the result of this attack and that's terrible. ISIS had to have known that infants could have been killed if they targeted a maternity ward.
I am guessing this attack was in retribution for the capture of a top ISIS commander that I mentioned yesterday. That was a huge blow to the terror group who has been on their heels for a long time now. This was to get revenge and to get their names back into the news and I think they succeeded.
It does seem that the attack could have been worse. The Afghan special forces were very effective in rescuing people, with more than 100 lives saved and it seems like the attackers were killed again. That was a pretty good showing for them, even if they couldn't save everyone.
This attack also seems to have derailed the peace process. Which is somewhat odd since it was committed by ISIS and not the Taliban. Indeed, the Taliban even condemned the attack which is really saying something as they are responsible for a lot of terror attacks. It might be because the other attack that killed 24 people as I am not sure who was responsible for that attack.
Hopefully this attack doesn't derail our own efforts to get out of the country. Though I do think that ISIS is a threat in the region and we should still fight them, we can't fight Afghanistan's battles for them. At some point they have to stand on their own.
