Video shows US Coast Guard stopping a drug smuggler's submarine.

Video released by the US Coast Guard shows them stopping a drug smuggler's submarine seizing a large amount of drugs. CBS News. The video shows an interdiction operation where several men jumped onto the ship and forced open the hatch. The crew of the Coast Guard cutter Munro participated in the interdiction. Since May the Coast Guard has seized $569 million worth of drugs including 39 tons of cocaine and 1000 pounds of marijuana in the Pacific Coast region. 55 smugglers were also arrested.

My Comment:
Just a quick post on a slow news day. I saw the video and I felt that it was worth sharing. There is almost nothing else to write about today so I'm glad I found at least something to write about.

As for the video itself, it was pretty intense. Jumping on a submarine with drug smugglers on board doesn't sound like a great time. The ship was half submerged and water was flowing everywhere. Plus there is always a chance that the smuggler could come up from the hold with a gun. Taking control of the ship was pretty damn cool.

I'm not sure if this was a true submarine or if it was some kind of low-rider ship. It was very low in the water but it obviously wasn't completely underwater. It makes me wonder if it was even capable of diving. And if it was, did the Coast Guard force it back up? Probably not but who knows.

The sad fact is though, that this is going to be a drop in the bucket. Drugs cross into the United States all the time and not just from the sea. They come in over the border on the ground and in the air and without a much more serious effort to protect the border it will continue in the future.
