ISIS may have dirty bomb materials -Reuters
According to the article ISIS has secured 88 lbs of Uranium kept in Mosul University. The fear is that it could be turned into a "dirty bomb", ie one that kills through radiation and contamination instead of an actual nuclear explosion.
My Comment:
If it's true then it's worrying. Nobody wants dirty bombs to show up, especially if they get smuggled out of Iraq. However there are some pretty huge caveats to this story. First, it's possible that ISIS has, or had now that this story broke, no idea what those compounds were. Second, even if they do, do they really have the expertise to create a dirty bomb? I know that they have explosives knowledge but i am assuming they need more knowledge to make an effective dirty bomb then a suicide vest or IED. Finally, given how desperate the situation is in Iraq, i wouldn't put it past the Iraqi government to either exaggerate the threat or make the whole thing up. They are desperate for foreign intervention and what better threat then the nuclear boogeyman to drag people into war?
