NSA whistle-blower Edward Snowden. The Guardian
Edward Snowden sat down with The Guardian and talked about a great many things. He unequivocally denied working for the Russians and continued his criticism of global surveillance. He says that in some ways today is worse then 1984 because every phone has a camera and every computer has a webcam. Whistle-blowing, internet usage and encryption are all discussed.
My Comment:
Great article by The Guardian. It's a bit of a read but it's very informative. Read the whole article and read it now. The bit about 18-22 year old NSA contractors passing along nude photos stuck me as both funny and very disturbing. I was also glad to hear Snowden directly confront the "Russian Spy" conspiracy theory. He doesn't work for them and never has.
The timing is terrible though. Given the fact that the world is on fire right now this story will probably be drowned out by Flight 17 in Ukraine, Israel and Hamas going to war and the utter chaos that is Iraq. Snowden should also get the hell out of Russia. I know his options are limited and it might be the case that he simply can't go anywhere, but Russia is political suicide right now. Most people understand that he has nothing to do with Russian international policy, but some will criticize him on the grounds that staying in Russia is tacitly accepting their actions in Ukraine. And it plays into the "Russian Spy" conspiracy theory. His message is too important for that.
