Biden says Ukraine "not ready" to join NATO...

Biden and Zelenskyy. Politico/AP.

Joe Biden has said that Ukraine is not ready to join NATO. Politico. Biden said there isn't unanimity in the alliance about bringing Ukraine in during the middle of a war with Russia. Biden also said that Ukraine had a lot of work to do to meet the qualifications for joining NATO. He did say that the United States would continue to supply Ukraine with weapons, days after saying he would send controversial cluster munitions to the country.

My Comment:

This is another big sign that Ukraine is losing the war. If Ukraine was winning and winning greatly there wouldn't be much of a discussion of Ukraine joining NATO. Russia would be unable to respond because their hands would be full already. With Ukraine losing that means that Russia remains a threat to the rest of NATO, even beyond mutually assured destruction.

It is also a bit of a sigh of relief for everyone worried about the war expanding beyond Ukraine. If Ukraine were to join NATO the alliance would be forced to join the war, which would lead to World War III and nuclear antihalation. Apparently the people handling Joe Biden finally figured out how insane that would be.

Even if Ukraine joining NATO was a thing that was possible, it would be a bad idea just on grounds of Ukraine being a terrible country. Ukraine has suspended democracy, banned churches, discriminated against ethnic groups, employed a huge number of Nazis and committed war crimes. They have no business being in NATO as anything other than cannon fodder.

Unfortunately, Biden has doubled down yet again in giving Ukraine even more weapons, including the cluster munitions. I do think it is funny that he is getting a significant amount of backlash from his own party for it, which is a first for the Ukraine conflict. The Democrats had no problem extending the war indefinitely, killing tens of thousands of Ukrainian and Russian soldiers and civilians but cluster munitions are somehow not ok?

I do think that the war is becoming unsustainable. My guess is that the real reason we gave Ukraine cluster munitions is because we are out of basically everything else. We are nowhere near war production and Russia still has a massive artillery and manpower advantage. My guess is that the powers that be were told that Ukraine would collapse without new ammo and cluster munitions were all they had left short of nuclear or chemical weapons.
