Senator Ted Cruz will self isolate after coming into contact with a Coronavirus victim at the CPAC conference. USA Today. Cruz said that he had a brief interaction with the man, which included shaking his hand, who was diagnosed with the virus after the conference. Cruz is not showing any symptoms of the disease and doctors have told him that his chance of contracting the virus is low. Cruz will stay in isolation for a further four days, which would be a total of 14 days since he shook the man's hand. President Trump and Vice President Pence were also in attendance at the CPAC conference.

My Comment:
This story will probably end up being nothing more than a footnote but it does show that even America's leadership is vulnerable to this virus. Ted Cruz will probably be fine but this was a very close call for him. Though you can certainly contract the virus that way it's unlikely that the man was shedding viruses at that point of his infection. And even if Cruz did get sick, he's young enough that he would likely only get a mild case.

Cruz is doing the right thing by isolating himself. There is some evidence that the virus can spread even before symptoms are showing. Given that is the case with the man who was shaking Cruz's hand it's possible he could still be infected. Waiting the extra four days will likely ensure that he's safe to head back to work without infecting others.

You have to feel for the guy from New Jersey that went to this conference. He didn't know he was sick at the time and now he is worried that he may have sickened his political friends. I think it's important to stress that you can't blame this guy for what happened, but he still probably feels terrible about it.

I do worry about our leadership though. This incident shows how easy it is for someone to potentially infect politicians. During an election politicians are expected to glad hand people and shaking hands is a good way to spread the virus. All it would take is one person to have the virus to infect one of our politicians. And given the high level of political anger today I wouldn't put it past someone to try an infect someone on purpose. That obviously wasn't the case in this incident but it could be true in the future.

I also think that we have discovered the downside of having such old politicians. Donald Trump is the youngest of the three credible Presidential candidates at 73. Joe Biden is 77 and Bernie Sanders is 78. Both the the Democrats aren't in the best health and if any of them get infected there is a good chance that they will be incapacitated or even killed. Mike Pence is younger in compression at 60 but that's not great either. And after him the Presidential succession line looks like an old folks home...

I wouldn't be at all surprised if we lose a few politicians over Coronavirus. It probably won't be Ted Cruz, who probably would have been sick at this point if he was going to do so, but I wouldn't be surprised if some big names end up sick or dead due to this virus. Our leadership is incredibly old and in the most vulnerable group for this virus...
