The message that appeared after Trump's account was deleted. BBC/Twitter.
Donald Trump's Twitter account was briefly deleted by a disgruntled twitter employee on their last day. BBC. The account was deactivated for 11 minutes before being restored. This was Trump's personal account realDonaldTrump not his official POTUS account. Twitter said that the incident was due to a customer service employee on their last day and they are investigating how it happened. President Trump's use of Twitter predates his presidency as he used it frequently during the campaign and even before it.
My Comment:Through our investigation we have learned that this was done by a Twitter customer support employee who did this on the employee’s last day. We are conducting a full internal review. https://t.co/mlarOgiaRF— Twitter Government (@TwitterGov) November 3, 2017
This is a huge scandal for Twitter. Even people who hate Trump realize that his Twitter account is the most important one on the platform. Trump has used Twitter to reach his supporters and make official statements. It's a major reason why he was elected in the first place and to have it go down is a major problem for everyone involved.
You would think that a single employee, one on the last day, would even be able to do this. A major account like the President's should have been better protected. Nobody should have been able to delete his account without approval from the Twitter higher ups and legal team. The fact that this happened does not reflect well on Twitter management.
I also think it is amazing that someone could hate President Trump this much. Whoever did this essentially destroyed any chances they have of getting a new career. He or she made an enemy out of not only the President of the United States but also out of everyone that works at Twitter. I doubt whoever this person is ever works in tech again unless someone wants to hire that person for virtue signaling purposes. Given how biased the tech industry is, I could see that happening, but I sure as hell wouldn't risk my career on that!
I also have to point out that this incident once again shows the political bias of Twitter. Could you imagine this ever happening to Barack Obama's account? Or Hillary Clinton's? It wouldn't happen because I sincerely doubt that anyone working at Twitter voted for Obama's opponents or voted for Trump over Hillary Clinton.
And it is similar to other cases recently on Twitter. Recently, Twitter banned former Trump campaign manager Roger Stone after an incident between him and CNN reporters. Admittedly, Stone said some pretty nasty things to those CNN reporters. His ban was at least defensible. But the left wing equivalent, Keith Olbermann, is allowed to swear, insult and libel the President without any consequence. It's clear that the only difference between Stone and Olbermann is the politics of both. Stone is a Republican and Olbermann is a Democrat. One gets banned and the other stays on.
Thankfully, this ban wasn't permanent. Had it been it would have been a massive PR disaster for Twitter. I know they have thought about it before but if they actually did it, it would probably destroy Twitter. Millions of Trump's fans would quit in protest and even non-Trump fans would be upset at banning the most powerful person in the world from the platform.
That's why I don't think it will ever happen. Twitter doesn't have much of a choice. Even though Twitter is biased against conservatives, they still need them and can't be so obvious with their bias that they ban Trump even if they hate him...
