Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
President Donald Trump and the Republican Party have pulled Bloomberg media's credentials over accusations of bias. BBC. Last week Bloomberg media said they would no longer critically cover Michael Bloomberg and any of the other Democratic candidates but would continue to do so against President Trump. In response President Trump has pulled Bloomberg's access to campaign rallies and other events. For their part, Bloomberg media said they are not biased against the President. Bloomberg's descion to not cover the Democrats has come under fire from other journalists, including former reporters for the outlet.
My Comment:
When I heard the news last week that Bloomberg was doing this I was shocked. I can see the argument that they could recuse themselves from election coverage but when they said they were only going to investigate President Trump it was clear what they were doing wasn't trying to keep journalistic standards but instead were trying to influence the election.
I think President Trump and the Republicans are right to pull media coverage. Bloomberg is playing favorites and there is no reason the President or the party should help their bottom line. I've always thought that the President should crack down on the media and not give them any perks unless they were going to give him fair coverage. Bloomberg is pretty clearly not doing that so I'm fine with them getting their credentials pulled.
However, I don't know if what Bloomberg is doing here is legal. If Michael Bloomberg still owns Bloomberg and they are taking actions to support his campaign, isn't than an illegal campaign contribution? I guess I'm not an expert on election law but at the very least this unethical.
As for Bloomberg himself having a media outlet that will exclusively target is yet another advantage for him. It's not a huge one as President Trump has been attacked by the media for years now, but if he was running against any other candidate it might help him. Presuming he actually somehow makes it and becomes the candidate it might be an advantage for him.
Still, this is Michael Bloomberg we are talking about here. He has no chance of winning regardless. His policies are so terrible and he is such a bad fit with the Democrats I can't see him getting the nomination,. Having a media outlet designed to attack his general election candidate won't help him if he never gets nominated. And neither will his billions of dollars.
