Man with concealed carry saves cop being beaten.

A man with a concealed carry licence saved a cop who was being beaten by a criminal. Fox 13. Derek Meyer spotted the suspect, Paul Douglas Anderson beating a Springville Utah police officer who found Anderson rooting around in a donation bin. Meyer did a u-turn and pulled out his pistol, which caused Anderson to flee. Anderson was soon arrested after and is a habitual criminal. The officer had a fractured eye socket and facial lacerations but is expected to make a full recovery.

My Comment:
Good story out of Utah and one that deserves more attention. The story is getting some coverage from mainstream sources but most of those are conservative but the Washington Post covered the story as well. Of course they had to load up the story with examples where things didn't work out, but what do you expect from the Washington Post.

It is very rare for the news media to cover such things. Generally when it happens it is only covered in local media or by conservative outlets. But whenever there is a mass shooting or terror attack the media can't help themselves and go nuts with the negative articles about guns. One of the reasons I started this blog is so I could cover these stories and, in some small way, spread the word when one of these incidents happen. Perhaps by doing so I will help convince some people that gun rights are important.

I think this is about as good as these things can go. Meyer didn't actually have to shoot anyone and the mere presence of him with a gun was enough to get Anderson to flee. Doing so, at the very least, stopped the assault on the police officer. It might have even saved that officer's life as getting beaten hard enough that it fractures your eye socket is probably life threatening. Nobody died in this situation. Not the cop, not the criminal and not the good Samaritan. That's a win in my book.

It seems like Meyer is a fairly humble man and says he didn't do anything special. The sad fact is that he's probably wrong. Most people wouldn't help a cop getting beat and even fewer would put their own lives on the line to help out. At the very least you should be calling the cops so they can back up their man but a lot of people wouldn't even do that. Actually putting your own self on the line to help a cop in need is above and beyond what can be expected from most people, as sad as that is.

As for Anderson, he just seems like a typical scumbag that is in and out of prison. Stealing from a charity is about as low as you can get even before he tried to beat up a cop. I am glad he is in custody.

I do think that this is a very good example of why concealed carry is a good idea. You never know when someone is going to threaten you or someone else. Having a gun on you can help protect someone besides yourself, and of course you can use it to protect yourself as well.
