Speaker Nancy Pelosi warns 2020 Democrat candidates that their far left polices won't help them win.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has warned 2020 candidates that their far left policies won't help them win in 2020. Bloomberg. Pelosi warned that "what works in San Francisco does not necessarily work in Michigan" adding that candidates "...must win the Electoral College". Though Pelosi didn't mention any candidates by name but is believed to be speaking about Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, both of which support a massive increase in spending on "medicare for all" and the "Green New Deal". Pelosi criticized both schemes as going to far and not being realistic.

My Comment:
I think Nancy Pelosi sees the writing on the wall. She knows that her party is being taken over by the socialist left and that there is very little she can do to stop it. I think she thinks that if Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders are the candidates that means that Trump's a shoe in for 2020, even with her impeachment scheme.

Of course, the impeachment scheme was largely political theater in the first place. Pelosi knows that there is basically no chance of getting rid of President Trump. But she was under a huge amount of pressure from the socialist wing of her party, lead by the squad. The impeachment is more about appeasing them to keep them in the party instead of trying to actually remove President Trump.

Is Pelosi right though, do these far left policies hurt the Democrats chances? I think so. There are people that love it and they are primary voters but I am thinking the vast majority of people are wondering how in the hell something like medicare for all will be paid for. People might like the idea of universal health care but not if they go bankrupt paying taxes for it.

That being said, I think back in 2016 that Bernie Sanders had a better chance of winning against President Trump than Hillary Clinton did. These leftists would lose a lot of their older and more moderate voters but I think they could get a lot of the more naive younger voters that would love things like free healthcare and college.

Still, is it worth turning off much of your voter base to get the youth vote? I don't know. I don't think minorities are excited about this level of socialism and I know that the blue collar Democrats who are still in the party for some reason may be finally driven out by embracing socialism.

It might depend on the candidate as well. I think that Sanders would do a much better job than Elizabeth Warren in a race against President Trump. Although Sanders comes off as a grumpy old man who shouts too much, he has way more charisma than Elizabeth Warren. Warren is completely unlikable and has never been able to counter President Trump. She has even less likability than Hillary Clinton herself and that is really saying something.

I think that this fracture between the establishment Democrats and the insurgent socialists in the party is a huge deal. The Democrats are very fractured right now, stuck between the old left, the new socialists and the racist/woke identity politics people. The only thing that is keeping them even somewhat unified is a mutual loathing of President Donald Trump, and that won't last forever. Either one of those factions are going to have to take over the party or the party will split.

With the stakes being so high, I would not be surprised if the DNC and the media do to Warren and Sanders what they did to Sanders in 2016. Already, many of the lefts biggest players are saying they won't support a far left candidate and even big tech is rumbling that they won't support Sanders or Warren. Given this environment it would not be surprising if they do some of the shady things they did in 2016.
