Protesters demonstrating after a similar attack in Kenya killed 28. Yahoo/Reuters
The Somali terror group Al Shabaab killed 36 workers at a quarry in Kenya on Monday. Yahoo/Reuters. The terrorists raided the quarry at 1:00 AM local time and separated the Muslim and non-Muslim workers. The group then killed all the non-Muslim workers, decapitating at least two of them. Al Shabaab claims the attack is in retaliation for Kenyan military intervention in Somalia. The attack comes on the heels of last weeks attack on a bus that killed 28 and the Westgate Shopping Mall attack last year, which killed 67. Critics are not impressed with the Kenyan security forces that are in charge of preventing such attacks. Though they receive western support, they have done little to stop Al Shabaab from continuing their operations. Some are calling for a withdrawal for Kenyan troops from Somalia and small protest movements are beginning to form.
My Comment:
I already talked about the attack on the bus last week here. It seems that Al Shabaab has been especially active lately. I understand that much of this is due to Kenyan intervention in Somalia but there is no excuse for killing so many innocent people. It seems to be working though if the reports about Kenya considering withdrawing troops are true. I really hope it isn't though because that just encourages further terrorism. Al Shabaab is a brutal and motivated group and any military action by Kenya is just an excuse for their ideology driven attacks. Letting them have free reign in Somali can only lead to more terror. Keeping troops in Somalia could draw more attacks but it could also diminish their power and kill their fighters. Too bad Kenya doesn't seem to be up to the task...
Of course if Somalia wasn't a textbook example of a failed state then none of this would be happening. I don't know how to fix Somalia and, at this point, I don't think anyone does. But something must be done to keep these terror groups from gaining control of territory. The last thing Africa needs is yet another area dominated by Muslim extremists.
