Turkey refuses to commit ground troops in the fight against ISIS saying that going it alone is "unrealistic". -CNN. The remarks come after ISIS is threatening to take over the town of Kobani which is right on the border of Turkey. While the battle rages in Kobani, Kurdish protesters have desperately tried to get Turkey to send ground troops to save the town, with 19 of them dying during the protests. All parties involved, including the Turks, Americans and Kurds, agree that airstrikes alone won't save Kobani but as of yet nobody is willing to commit troops. The Turks claim that there is no sectarian reason for not acting, even though the Kurds disagree. Most of the remaining civilians in Kobani have crossed the border into Turkey with only fighters and a few civilian helpers left over.
My Comment:
Once again, my opinion of the Turks is lowered. They don't care what happens to Kobani because they don't like the Kurds. I don't buy the excuse that they can't do it on their own. They probably could at least save Kobani. They just don't want to. The destruction of the Kurdish fighters, if not the civilians, is in their best interest. Too bad destroying ISIS isn't a bigger priority for the Turks, because I doubt ISIS will stop at the border.
As for the U.S. claim that Kobani isn't important, it sure is for the people that are still fighting there. Plus it will link up ISIS's forces from the west to east, securing their supply lines and allowing them to consolidate forces. Defeating the Kurds yet again, all while dodging U.S. airstirkes will be a huge propaganda victory for ISIS and they are being handed it on a silver platter. They will get plenty of new footage and prisoners for their recruitment and propaganda campaigns. No matter what the Obama administration says, this is a major defeat for everyone involved that isn't ISIS.
