The Odd push to make gun control a "woman's rights" issue.

Amazing as it is, gun control is still rearing it's ugly head even after the massive failure to pass laws since the push began. A few states did pass new laws and there was the Russian sanctions that effectively banned AK-47 imports, but other then that the trend is for looser laws. Just recently a court overthrew Washington D.C.'s ban on carrying firearms in public, following all 50 states. Clearly the great push for gun control has failed. It's not surprising then that the gun control lobby have switched gears.

Recently Bloomberg's anti-gun group Everytown for Gun Safety released an unintentionally pro-gun anti-gun ad. You have probably already seen it but just in case I'll post it here for references sake:

Do I really have to spell out how pro gun that was? Really? Ok. The cops did nothing to protect her because they didn't have nearly enough time to react to the situation. Obviously if the woman had a handgun or shotgun or even a rifle, she could have shot that guy before he did anything. Or even better just flashed it at the guy before he got in the house. Nobody would have gotten hurt, the guy would have gone to jail and cute little "appeal to emotion fallacy" kid would have been fine. And the original scenario would not have turned out different if the thug had a knife, baseball bat or his bare hands. Face it, the only way that woman was going to survive is if she fought back.

So why release such a unintentionally ridiculous video? Well the big push in gun control is no longer magazine limits, handgun bans or concealed carry bans. Those have failed and failed hard. Now the push is to stay relevant. So the new hot button topic is domestic abuse and stalking.

I must make a statement here because i know i will be attacked for it if I don't. I'm not sticking up for domestic abusers or stalkers. I'm a big supporter of equal rights and nobody should ever have to face threats or violence. People who have been convicted (mere accusations shouldn't be enough) of making violent threats or any kind of violence deserve to have their firearms taken away. It does not matter if it's a man, a woman or something in between, nobody deserves to be the victim of violence.

But there is the rub.The loophole that these new laws are designed to close does not exist in every state. In my state, Wisconsin, it's already illegal for anyone to posses a firearm if they are under an order of protection. Stalking is also a felony, which of course, bars possession of firearms to anyone who has been convicted. Some states do not have felony stalking laws, but wouldn't the easier solution be to increase the punishment for those crimes? Make them felonies so that they can't purchase firearms federally? Why do we need a federal law?

Well we don't. These are state issues that should be solved on the state level. But gun control is generally a national issue. Bloomberg's group, Everytown for Gun Safety is especially focused on national gun control. With no luck whatsoever is passing national gun control, the gun control groups are desperate for any victory. Gun control groups aren't as reliant on grass route fundraising like gun rights organizations are, but they still need support from soccer moms and liberals. They won't get that support if they can't do a damn thing right. So they try and pass this do-nothing bill to fix a problem that doesn't exist.

And the worst part is how sexist the narrative is, against both men and women. Take this article for example, allegedly co-written by Gabby Giffords, but most likely completely ghost-written by Katie Ray-George. Throughout the article they try to make it seem that gun violence is a uniquely female problem and that woman are the main victims of gun violence. To that i say this:

Men are clearly the primary victims of gun homicides. Women are much less likely to be murdered by any weapon then men. To suggest that women are especially vulnerable is a deliberate misstatement of fact and pretty damn sexist as well. But that doesn't fit the narrative that gun control groups and the American political left like to push. Women are helpless victims and only the government can protect them. Any attempt by women to protect themselves is futile, only cops should have guns. That is of course incredibly sexist coming from a group of people that by and large claim to be for woman's empowerment and feminism.

I'm for empowering both women and men. True empowerment is being secure in your body and confident in your ability to defend yourself. Firearms make everyone almost equal in a fight. The smallest, physically weakest person on earth can defend themselves from a demigod of physical perfection if they have a weapon to protect themselves with, and more often then not, that weapon will be a firearm. Owning a firearm is the ultimate expression of empowerment. I matter. I can defend myself. I won't let you take my life.

But empowerment is the last thing Gun Control groups and the political left (and occasionally the right as well) want. Strong independent women that are confident in their minds and bodies do not need the government to take care of them. People that have the ability to defend themselves from crime do not need a police state. And that is what this is all about. Not about protecting women, but empowering the state at the expense of the individual. And fostering dependence on that state as well. After all, if the state can decide that you can't protect yourself in the way of your choosing, then you are completely dependent on them for physical security. That's can't happen in America. That won't happen in America.
