Russia cracks down on internet freedoms. -Yahoo/Reuters

File photo of a Russian using the internet. Yahoo/AP

Russia has cracked down on internet freedoms, requiring all public wi-fi users to provide their names. Yahoo/Reuters Russia's rationalization for the new laws are due to concerns of espionage, terrorism and extremism. The new laws drew a storm of criticism from both civil rights activists and business in Russia. Others wonder if the new laws are even feasible.

My Comment:
Putin is right about one thing. There is an information war going on. There is plenty of propaganda on both sides and it isn't hard to understand why Putin would want to control access to information. But this strikes me as stupid and unethical. People have the right to read whatever they want, no matter what Putin says. Plus I have no idea how this would actually work, and even if it does somehow end up working, people will work around it.
