Self guided bullets are a reality- The Verge

DARPA test showing how effective EXACTO is.

DARPA has developed a .50 round that can self guide to a target. The Verge. The EXACTO, code for Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance, round can change its ballistics mid flight.

My Comment:
In addition to being really, really cool, this is pretty amazing technology. Sure they were able to the same thing with shoulder fired missiles for quite some time now but to do it with such a relatively small round is very impressive. We are a long way away from this showing up for your handgun but if the tech can be perfected it should make an impact on the battlefield.

It also seems that the government is interested in making sniping more idiot proof. Right now, long range sniping is a very difficult skill to learn, requiring training and resources. If this technology pans out anyone should be able to do so. Of course the immediate concern is when other military's or civilians get a hold of it It sounds like a fairly effective assassination weapon should it fall into the wrong hands. Expect this technology to be closely guarded.
